Concurrent with the transformation of the crypt a joint project with the Royal Academy of Music was established to install a new organ built by the celebrated Austrian firm, Rieger. This is the magnificent instrument in the church today.
It is one of the finest organs in the country. (The pipes either side of the chancel are dummies). It is played daily by organ students of the Royal Academy. St Marylebone has had a reputation for the high quality of its music for many years. With the Rieger organ, a professional choir on Sundays and a wealth of concerts and recitals in the church throughout the year, it is a reputation being well maintained.
Sir John Stainer's oratorio "The Crucifixion" was written for the choir of St Marylebone Parish Church in 1886. It has been performed every Good Friday evening at 6.30 pm ever since. A CD of a recent performance is available, and also a CD of the kind of music regularly performed at St Marylebone, and one of recent commissions for anthems by contemporary composers of church music.
