The St Marylebone Youth Choir was founded in March 2007. It was conceived to offer a high-quality musical education to the young people of the church, forming a link between the church’s professional music department and the Young Church. Open to all children aged 9 and above, the choir rehearses for one hour each week, after school on Fridays (4:30pm – 5:30pm). The choir is directed by Gavin Roberts, St Marylebone’s Assistant Director of Music, who prepares them for their main duty; to sing once a month as part of the Sunday Morning Sung Eucharist. They provide music to be sung during Communion accompanied by the organ.
They wear cassocks, ruffs and surplices as well as taking part in the main procession during the first hymn. As well as fulfilling their role in the Sunday services, the choir has other performance opportunities. Most notably in December 2007, they gave excellent performances as part of the Young Church Christmas Nativity, singing John Rutter’s Star Carol and Jeffrey Kemp’s A King is Born. They will give a Music after Mass concert on 29 June 2008, and will take a leading role in the prestigious Vaughan-Williams Anniversary project Fine Lines, which will be launched at the church on 31 August 2008. Their repertoire includes music by Ralph Vaughan-Williams, Cesar Franck, John Dankworth, Peter Hurford, Malcolm Archer and Gabriel Fauré.
The choir rehearses on Fridays (4:30pm – 5:30pm) in St Marylebone School Music Department. If your child is a keen singer and interested in joining please contact Gavin Roberts at groberts@stmarylebone.org or telephone the music office via the parish telephone system on 020 79357315. |
